Healthy Community

Everyone deserves the opportunity to live their healthiest life.

At United Way of Monmouth and Ocean Counties (UWMOC), we help people overcome barriers to good health by connecting them with the resources they need to lead healthy lives. Our partnerships and programs address gaps and expand access to crucial health services and supports. United is the Way to ensure all of us have resources for a healthy life.

Our current Healthy Community initiatives include:

Project Spotlight: Access to Health

Health is a critical component of youth success, impacting growth, development and ability to learn. In 2017, UWMOC & several local school districts identified the gap in access to health care for many students. UWMOC convened the schools and Visiting Nurse Association of Central Jersey to bring School-Based Nurse Practitioners (SBNP) to those local schools – providing primary health care for students directly in-school; reducing absenteeism as well as reducing lost work time for parents.

Last school year, the project was expanded to also include Public Health Nurse (PHN) services enabling us to reach more students and work with more schools. PHN services include: developmental, vision, dental and hearing screenings as well as home visits to families.

Thanks to the unwavering commitment of the partnership, this project is now poised for sustainability.

Last school year, over 3,400 health services and screenings were provided to youth through this partnership

“We've been fortunate enough to utilize the services of the nurse practitioner several times. The NP was able to examine and diagnose him, and when necessary, prescribed him an antibiotic that I was able to pick up from the pharmacy later…as working parents, the convenience of having the NP in school is invaluable.”
