Emergency Food and Shelter Program

efsp

UWMOC manages and provides administrative support for both the Monmouth and Ocean County EFSP Board and program.

This national initiative was created to help people with economic emergencies by providing funding to local organizations to address hunger and homelessness. Each year, the local independent boards select community organizations to receive funding for services such as food, shelter, rent/mortgage and utility assistance.

For Phase 41 of the Emergency Food and Shelter Program (EFSP), Monmouth County and Ocean County have been awarded federal funds made available through the U.S. Department of Homeland Security (DHS)/Federal Emergency Management Agency under the Emergency Food and Shelter National Board Program.

Monmouth County has been chosen to receive $272,244 and Ocean County has been chosen to receive $258,555 to supplement emergency food and shelter programs in each respective county.

Funds are made available through the Dept. of Homeland Security, Federal Emergency Management Agency under the Emergency Food and Shelter National Board Program.

The selection was made by a National Board that is chaired by the U.S. Department of Homeland Security’s Federal Emergency Management Agency and consists of representatives from:

  • American Red Cross
  • Catholic Charities, USA
  • National Council of the Churches of Christ in the USA
  • The Jewish Federation of North America
  • The Salvation Army, and
  • United Way Worldwide.

The Board was charged to distribute funds appropriated by Congress to help expand the capacity of food and shelter programs in high-need areas around the country.

A Local Monmouth County Board and Ocean County Board will each determine how the funds awarded to our respective counties are to be distributed among the emergency food and shelter programs run by local service agencies in the area through a competitive application process. The Local Board is responsible for recommending agencies to receive these funds and any additional funds made available under this phase of the program.

Under the terms of the grant from the National Board, local agencies selected to receive funds must:
  • be private voluntary non-profits or units of government,
  • be eligible to receive Federal funds,
  • have an accounting system,
  • practice nondiscrimination,
  • have demonstrated the capability to deliver food and/or shelter programs, and
  • if they are a private voluntary organization, have a voluntary board.

Qualifying agencies are urged to apply.

Public or private voluntary agencies interested in applying for Emergency Food & Shelter Program funds must contact United Way of Monmouth and Ocean Counties to receive an application at 848-206-2046 or e-mail at info@uwmoc.org.

The deadline to submit an application for consideration is Friday, May 3, 2024 by 4:00 pm. Agencies applying for EFSP funding for the first time will also be required to attend an interview with the respective county EFSP Local Board.
